About The Role

Reports to: Head of Integrated Performance, Lead Academy Physiotherapist & Club Doctor

Direct reports: Provides direction to, but not line management of: Academy Chartered Physiotherapists; Academy Sports Therapists; Paramedics

Key Contacts: Academy Medical & Performance Staff; First Team Medical & Performance Staff; Academy Coaches; Academy players & parents; External Consultants 

Location: Based at the Club's Training Ground (Heston). Domestic travel and occasional travel abroad may be required

Hours: Casual hours as the role requires. Due to the nature of the job, weekend work and occasional weekday evening work will be necessary

Job Purpose: To provide medical services to the Academy, primarily for the U18 & Development Squads; To be involved with the delivery of medical services for the Schoolboy age groups (U9-U16) as directed by the Head of Integrated Performance, Lead Academy Physiotherapist & Club Doctor

Remuneration: Rate to commensurate with skills and experience

Role Accountabilities & Key Duties

  1. Ensure high standards of medical services for Academy players of all ages.
  2. Assess and treat any injuries / conditions U18 and Development Squad players may present with; Schoolboy players to be assessed and treated as required; discuss individual treatment and rehabilitation programmes with the Academy Chartered Physiotherapists and Club Doctor.
  3. Liaise with external healthcare professionals as and when required under the guidance of the Club Doctor; assist with onward referral for appropriate treatment if required.
  4. To involve First Team medical staff in the management of Academy players as required.
  5. To be responsible, with the Club Doctor for emergency action plans and relevant health and safety processes.
  6. To have an involvement in the screening processes including pre-scholar signings, preseason examinations, cardiac screening and concussion baseline testing; assist in any subsequent investigation that may be appropriate.
  7. To be available out of hours to discuss on injuries / conditions with the Academy Chartered Physiotherapists and the Club Doctor, and to provide advise as required; to have occasional contact with players out of hours.
  8. Provide medical input on matchdays, primarily but not exclusively for the U18s and Development squad as required.
  9. Be available for consultation at the Academy on at least one occasion per week (in addition to any attendance at matches).
  10. Produce up-to-date high-quality medical notes within 24 hours of assessment/treatment and logged onto the club's current computerised database; in line with General Medical Council (GMC) guidelines, ensure all medical records and injury data are recorded, accurate injury logs are maintained for audit purposes.
  11. To maintain knowledge and understanding of the FA Doping programme and the legislation; to ensure the Club fulfils all its requirements under the FA Doping Programme.
  12. Ensure the relationship with children and vulnerable adults is appropriate and language, behaviours and demeanour are suitable.
  13. Monitor cleanliness of workplaces and equipment, liaising with relevant staff to improve or develop facilities; to be responsible for equipment used in carrying out medical duties.
  14. To maintain own continuing professional development (CPD) by keeping up to date with any trends and developments in the sports injury and performance sector and incorporate them as necessary into your work so as to provide the best possible treatment to all players; being responsible for maintaining written evidence within an up-to-date CPD portfolio; to attend mandatory training and incorporate these within working practices.
  15. To contribute to the medical department in-service training programme.
  16. To attend Child Protection training and work in accordance with the national guidelines.
  17. To act in accordance with the Rules of Professional Conduct and Standards of practice set by the General Medical Council (GMC).
  18. Cover for First Team training and matches as directed by the Club Doctor.
  19. Participate in the appraisal process.
  20. Comply with all company policies/procedures. Adhere to all company regulations regarding policies, procedures, health, safety, and security.
  21. To develop a sound working knowledge of safeguarding children's regulations, including legislation & governing body rules.
  22. All other duties that may arise from time to time and fall within the scope of this position.

About The Candidate

Qualifications

  1. A UK medical degree (MBBS, MBChB, or MBBCh) or international equivalent – Essential
  2. Post-graduate qualification within sport and exercise medicine or a related field of study – Desirable
  3. Current Full GMC registration at the time of applying – Essential
  4. Up-to-date FA Level 5 ATMMiF or PHICIS level 3 qualification – Essential
  5. FA Safeguarding Children – Essential
  6. Enhanced DBS Check – Essential
  7. Ultrasound qualification – Desirable
  8. Full and comprehensive individual medical indemnity which covers you to practice at the club treating elite sports people without need for direct senior supervision – Essential

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  1. Able to assess injury – Essential
  2. Experience of planning and delivering treatment of sports injuries – Essential
  3. Interest in paediatrics – Essential
  4. Previous experience of working with elite level youth athletes and treating sporting injuries – Essential
  5. Good understanding of growth & maturation and its implications on the development of athletes – Essential
  6. Experience of working in a professional football club environment – Desirable
  7. Experience of working in a team environment – Essential
  8. IT skills to include a very high level of competence using Excel, Word, and PowerPoint – Essential
  9. Excellent communication skills – Essential
