About The Role

Wrexham AFC is looking for an experienced Rehabilitation Physiotherapist to lead and deliver gold standard, innovating and evidence‑based rehabilitation to our first-team players.  This role will oversee daily management of players rehabilitation and return‑to‑play pathways, optimise player performance during injury, reduce re‑injury risks, and ensure a safe and effective return to training, competition and performance.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure appropriate planning and delivery of players rehabilitation pathways for all first team players, focusing on a safe and effective return to training, performance and competition.
  • Design and implement individualised medium and long-term rehabilitation programmes tailored to the player’s injury.
  • Oversee and implement return to play protocols and monitor players on return to training, performance and competition.
  • Develop and implement rehab programmes for players injury with clearly identified exit criteria at each stage of the rehabilitation process in addition to clear objective testing and data display to track progression
  • Help develop and monitor gold standard injury prevention strategies, collaborating with Head of Performance and Sports Science, S&C, coaches, physical performance and medical team.
  • Contribute towards innovation, research studies and publications on rehabilitation pathways and best practice within the department.
  • Support education and mentorship within the Medical Performance and Sports Science Department and across the club to help promote a one club approach to rehabilitation where possible.

Leadership and Communication

  • Communicating effectively with the Head of Performance and Sports Science to ensure they are kept up-to-date on all medical matters relating to all first team players rehabilitation.
  • Design and deliver daily, individually tailored rehab sessions for injured players both gym and grass based.
  • Liaise closely with all medical performance and sports science staff to ensure an effective and efficient service is provided to all players.
  • Lead and oversee Wrexham AFC rehabilitation protocols, ensuring alignment with all medical performance and sports science staff.

Clinical

  • Provide, implement and oversee phase-specific player rehabilitation plans and pathways (daily, weekly, medium/long term).
  • Provide weekly, monthly and injury specific update presentations to Head of Performance, Sports Science and wider MDT on injuries as requested.
  • Review and provide further opinion on the management of all first team injuries as required by the Head of Performance and Sports Science.
  • Lead the rehabilitation of injured players as required by Head of Performance and Sports Science
  • Accompanying players to medical appointments as required and requested by Head of Performance and Sports Science.

Administration

  • Carrying out departmental administration tasks as required
  • Producing daily and weekly rehabilitation plans for sports science and medicine staff
  • Create a Wrexham AFC rehabilitation hub of our athletes in collaboration with the club’s data scientist.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical notes in keeping with HCPC / CSP regulations
  • Ensuring Continuing Professional Development is undertaken
  • Other duties and responsibilities as required by Head of Performance and Sports Science.

About The Candidate

Experience/ Qualifications Required 

  • BSc / MSc in Physiotherapy
  • HCPC and CSP registration
  • Up to date ATMMIF qualification 

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION – SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Proven ability to design and deliver individualised return to play programmes for elite athletes.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading the full rehabilitation process from acute injury through to return to competition.
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary environment in a professional sports setting, preferably football.
  • Significant experience in the assessment, treatment and management of professional athletes, preferably football.
  • Significant experience planning and delivering gym-based rehabilitation strategies, using clinical and pitch-based objective measures to inform rehabilitation.
  • Knowledgeable in the assessment, treatment and diagnosis of sports injuries and current sports injury research.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of rehabilitation and injury reduction strategies.
  • Be flexible to support evening, weekend, and match day rehab and recovery needs when required.
