Exeter City Football Club seeks to ensure the safety, safeguarding and wellbeing of all children, young people and adults at risk who engage in its activities.

We are seeking committed, enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join us as Academy Physiotherapist, Sports Therapist, Rehabilitator as part of our Medical & Performance Department. The successful candidates will play an important role in supporting the delivery of high-quality medical care to Academy players, helping to optimise their health, wellbeing and athletic performance. Role

The successful candidates will support the delivery of the Academy medical provision by providing high-quality assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services for players. Responsibilities will include delivering pitch-side emergency aid, accurately diagnosing injuries, developing appropriate treatment plans and supporting safe and effective return-to-play processes. The role will require the application of evidence-based rehabilitation strategies, particularly for musculoskeletal injuries, while working closely with coaches, sport science staff, medical colleagues and the wider Academy team.

The successful candidates will assist in maintaining a safe and professional medical environment by monitoring medical equipment and supplies, ensuring appropriate stock levels and reporting any issues promptly. Maintaining accurate and timely medical records using the Club’s documentation systems is essential and supporting communication between medical and coaching staff, providing flexible cover for training and match-day medical duties as required.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively alongside players, coaches and staff across the Academy. They will be organised, proactive and capable of contributing to the planning and delivery of innovative medical support programmes.

Candidates must have a Degree in Physiotherapy and will need to be approachable, committed to continuous learning and willing to share knowledge with others. A strong work ethic, positive attitude, personal drive and a genuine passion for supporting the growth and development of Academy players are essential.

About The Candidate

Purpose & Role function

  • Deliver pitch-side emergency aid.
  • Support and provide high-quality medical care for all academy players.
  •  Uphold and demonstrate the values, standards and behaviours expected by ECFC both inside & outside the Club.

Role Summary

  • Support the implementation of activities aimed at optimising the health, athletic performance, and well-being of all Academy players.
  • Provide timely and accurate diagnoses, treatment plans, and return-to-play timelines for players following any injury.
  • Apply an evidence-based approach to rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols for players with musculoskeletal injuries.
  •  Deliver pitch-side emergency aid and ensure effective training for part-time medical staff to maintain a safe environment for all players. Undertake any other reasonable and relevant tasks as assigned.
  • Monitor medical supplies and equipment to ensure stock is adequate, in-date, and functioning correctly; report any discrepancies to the Lead Academy Physiotherapist (U18).
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all activities using the Club’s note-keeping system.
  • Provide support and cover for Sports Science and Medical staff in pitch-side duties, rehabilitation services, and other key responsibilities as needed.
  • Undertake any other reasonable and relevant tasks as assigned.
Safeguarding
  • Attend seasonal safeguarding training as required by the Club.
  • Adhere to all guidelines contained within the Club's Safeguarding Policy.
  • Utilise the ‘MyConcern’ system to ‘recognise, respond, report and record’ any safeguarding incidents in a timely and detailed manner.
  • Place player safety and welfare as a top priority at all times.
  •  Ensure all medical equipment is safe & stored securely.

  • Previous employment within a professional sport setting (desirable).

  • Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) enhanced certification (essential).
  •  Upkeep & update all professional & industry qualifications through related external CPD (essential)

Regulatory Standards

  • Ensure consistent compliance with EPPP Safe to Operate, Compliance, and Standards relevant to the Medical Department.
  • Monitor medical supplies and equipment to ensure stock levels are adequate, items are in-date, and equipment is functioning correctly; promptly report any discrepancies to the Lead Academy Physiotherapist (U18).

ISO & EFL Audit

  • Ensure all medical notes are accurately annotated and promptly uploaded to the Football Intelligence Platform (FIP) for auditing purposes.

Medical Provision

  • Record all medical notes accurately and clearly on the FIP, providing timely updates on player medical status to the medical team and football coach communication channels at the end of each shift.
  • Provide a minimum of two days per month of match-day or training pitch-side emergency aid, responding promptly to the Lead Academy Physiotherapist’s monthly rota updates and remaining flexible with working days and hours to accommodate football schedule requirements.
  • Diagnose player injuries accurately and implement effective rehabilitation plans to ensure a safe and efficient return to fitness.

Personal Development

Maintain all personal professional qualifications in accordance with current EFL rules, including HCPC registration, ITMMiF or UEFA FDEP certification, and DBS clearance.
